Oculus Quest Chromecast Lag (Final Solution for Intolerable Casting Lag)

Casting your Oculus Quest and Oculus Quest 2 to Chromecast is a great way to share your headset view with family and friends. Chromecast devices help you cast your content to a TV making it somewhat like a smart TV.

Whether you want to give others a view of your VR games, videos, movies, or songs on your headset, using a Chromecast makes it possible.

With some Chromecast devices, you may have noticed a little drag between what you hear and what is displayed on the screen, which can otherwise be described as Chromecast lag or latency.

The Oculus Quest Chromecast lag is particularly noticeable when playing fast-speed games like Beat Saber and also while streaming videos. The recurrent stuttering and frame skipping can frustrate your fun time and make you lose interest in the game.

The lag duration may differ with different Chromecast devices. Here is what we mean, for some Chromecast devices, there might be a delay of five to ten seconds while some may be less than one second during gaming, streaming, and other activities.

The one-second delay might be somewhat insignificant and may not affect your streaming activities much. For a professional gamer, a five to ten seconds lag between the image on your screen and its audio is a whole lot of latency that can make you lose interest especially while playing a game like Beat Saber.

Possible Causes of Chromecast Lag

It is a known fact that Chromecast depends on your Wi-Fi network to stream videos and other content, hence if your home network is slow, you might experience lagging with Chromecast. However, this is not the only cause of Chromecast lagging.

How do I fix Chromecast Lagging

Getting a low latency Chromecast device or TV box can help you surmount the lag issue or reduce it to the barest minimum. Several Chromecast devices support 4k streaming and low latency and a major one of them is the Google Chromecast Ultra.

Google Chromecast Ultra is ideal for the fast casting of Oculus Quest and Quest 2 headset and it has the following basic standout features:

  • Low lag during casting, specifically 1-second lag or lesser
  • Features an ethernet port which serves as an alternative to wireless connectivity
  • High streaming quality up to 4k.

Others include the Nvidia Shield Pro and MECOOL KM2 Android TV Box.

Other ways to Fix Chromecast Laggings

There are a few things that you can do to fix this and we would be highlighting them shortly.

Play Local Media Files – To reduce lagging on your Chromecast, you can play already downloaded files on your Oculus Quest 2 device.

This majorly applies to videos. To do this, try downloading the video you plan to watch before streaming it on Chromecast. This has proven to reduce lagging to the barest minimum. However, this method may not always be applicable as not all videos or movies are available for download.

Use the 5GHz Connection – You can also reduce lagging by enabling the 5GHz wireless connection on a router that supports the 5GHz connection. 5GHz can transfer data up to 866 Mbps and the 2.4GHz sending only up to 75 Mbps.

Although the 5GHz connection is unarguably faster than the 2.4GHz, the latter has a wider range of coverage. In essence, get a router that enables the 5GHz connection, you will need it for Chromecast.

Modify the Quality of the Video Playback – Reducing the projection quality in your setting can aid the reduction of lags with Chromecast.  Here is a stepwise procedure on how to go about it:

  • Select the “Chromecast button” which is at the top-right side of Chrome and click on “Options”
  • Scroll down and locate the “Projection Quality” tab in the “Chromecast Settings”.
  • Then, from the options, choose a lower resolution.

Chromecast requires more bandwidth to stream HD videos on Chromecast and reducing the video quality will in turn reduce the bandwidth that it would need to stream an HD video.

Stop Other Applications – You can fix lag issues by making sure that a large part of your bandwidth goes to the Chromecast device. Streaming HD videos with Wi-Fi uses a lot of bandwidth and opening a lot of applications can reduce the bandwidth available for your Chromecast device.

Hence, while using Chromecast, try to close other running applications on your device to reduce lagging. Also, while streaming videos and other content, try to disconnect other users from your network to prevent sharing of bandwidth which can result in latency.

Tweak Your Wireless Signal – To resolve lag issues, ensure that both your headset and Chromecast device are properly connected to the wireless source. While the Chromecast device should be kept within 4 meters from the router, the distance between your headset and Chromecast should not also be more than 4 meters.

Restart your Chromecast and Router – Lagging while streaming content may be caused by the instability of your network connections. Resolving this issue is quite a breeze, all you need to do is to restart your router and your Chromecast device.

Restart your router by first unplugging the power cable of your router, and plugging it back into your router before switching it on. Ensure to wait for 5 to 10 seconds in between.

Also, follow the same step to restart your Chromecast device while ensuring that it is receiving adequate power. You can do this by employing the use of a wall adapter to power your Chromecast device.

Switch to a Wired Connection – Not all Chromecast devices are equipped with LAN ports for wireless connection. There are 2 ways to deal with this, the first is to get a Chromecast device that is equipped with a LAN port. Alternatively, you can get a Google Ethernet Adapter for Chromecast to resolve lag issues with Chromecast.

Use 50Hz HDMI Mode – You can also do a lot of repair by enabling the 50Hz HDMI mode on your Chromecast device, this is especially important when you encounter lagging while streaming sports content.

To make it easier, we have outlined the basic steps involved in switching to the 50Hz HDMI mode:

  • Open the “Google Home” app on your Oculus Quest or any other device you are using for streaming.
  • Head to “Your Devices” and pick “Chromecast”.
  • Then, open “Settings” and switch on “Use 50 Hz HDMI Mode”.
